Hey kids!

Because I am totally crazypants, I decided this year, sort of at random, to do a triathlon. Last year was the first time since about the fifth grade that I'd run any races, and I signed up for and completed two 5ks. I was talking to a friend after one of those, and he made triathlon sound like the best thing ever, so here I am. My chosen event, the Olympic distance, is a 1.5k swim, followed by a 40K bike ride, and a 10K run. It's kinda like swimming from the Shedd to Navy Pier, followed by Bike the Drive, followed by a Shamrock Shuffle. In August. In the world's largest event of its kind. I need help if I'm going to pull this off!

But I'm not the only person out there who needs helps. Every 9 ½ minutes someone in the United States is infected with HIV. In Illinois in 2009, 30,295 people were living with HIV/AIDS; most of those, 20,676, are in Chicago. That number grew to over 22,000 in Chicago by the end of 2010. With the state budget problems, Illinois is cutting back on medical funding assistance programs, which leaves us as individuals to close that gap.

So I have decided to train with the TEAM TO END AIDS (T2) endurance training program to support the AIDS Foundation of Chicago. AFC is leading the fight against HIV/AIDS in the Chicago area by funding prevention programs and services such as medical care, food, and housing, to stop the spread of HIV and help people live full and productive lives until the day there’s a cure.
