Dear Friends and Family,
Some of you might already have heard the news. I'm training for the 2009 Bank of America Chicago Marathon on October 11th, and I'm raising money for the AIDS Foundation of Chicago (AFC). That's right folks, I'll be pounding the pavement for 26.2 miles. However I can't do this alone. I hope you will consider making a contribution to the AIDS Foundation today. Every little bit helps.
To some of you spending the next 3 months running over 500 miles in preparation to run 26.2 mile long race will sound absolutely insane. However, let me try to explain why I'm doing this.
Everyone knows AIDS is a huge problem and everyone knows what it is. The spread of AIDS became particularly important issue to me when I worked in Ghana as a Peace Corps Volunteer (2005-07). I spent a lot of my time working with community members to teach HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention education. I met people with AIDS. I saw families turned into swiss cheese as mothers and fathers became ill with AIDS. I worked with orphan children who's parents had passed away from the disease. I met old women and men who's adult children were not around to support and care for them.
In Ghana and right here in the US, it's not only HIV prevention education that is important but also access to medical care and food and housing that is key in helping those living with HIV to live a full and productive life until we finally find a cure.
