Hi Everyone!
This summer I took a giant leap of faith by signing myself up for the AIDS Marathon Training Program, which is specifically designed to help me prepare to run the Chicago Marathon on October 11th, 2009. I am simultaneously raising money to benefit the AIDS Foundation of Chicago. It is a serious personal challenge for me to consider going the distance of 26.2 miles, but an even greater challenge to raise more funds than ever before to support the work of the AIDS Foundation. As you may know, I've participated in the AIDS Walk/Run for several years, but this year I felt the need to take things to a higher level.
The training program requires me to run three days a week, so I have been hitting the pavement every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning. The training runs on Saturdays take place at 7:00 a.m. on Foster Avenue Beach, right by Lake Michigan. We started with an initial three-mile run and we just completed 26 miles last week. The marathon is just 3 short weeks away! Overall, I'm told that I'll run about 500 miles!
Since I've met the fundraising requirement of $1,600, anything over and above that is going to help the AFC in many and various ways. Some of you may know that I do this in memory of my older brother Eric, who died in 2006 after having HIV for 19 years -- He's the one in all the pictures with me! It is my profound honor to help those living and struggling with HIV/AIDS as Eric did.
